Passion Week: Wednesday, April 1, AD 33

Wednesday seems to be a more peaceful day, but Jesus’ enemies are meeting in the background seeking to destroy him. (Later Peter would look back and declare that everything was happening according to God’s plan to redeem His people through the death of His Son. See Acts 2:22-24.)

First, the Jewish leaders meet to plot Jesus’ death. In that meeting the High Priest declares, “You know nothing at all. Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.”

Second, Satan enters Judas Iscariot! Judas goes and meets with the chief priests and asks what they will give him if he betrays Jesus. The price for Jesus is set at thirty silver coins. At today’s prices per ounce, that would be less than $500. Judas now looks for the right moment to hand Jesus over to them. “Spy Wednesday” gets its name because this is the day on which Judas betrayed Jesus to the Sanhedrin.

Scripture Reading: John 11:47-53; Luke 22:1-6
